Periodontics Q&A

What is periodontics?

Periodontics is the care of your periodontium or the collection of structures that hold your teeth in place. While there are many components of your periodontium, periodontic treatments most often focus on improving the health of your gums.

What is periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease is a condition that involves a bacterial infection in your gum tissue. It happens when you let plaque build up on the surface of your teeth. Plaque is full of acids and bacteria but is harmless if you brush and floss it away regularly. When it sits on your teeth for too long, however, it begins to irritate your gum tissue.

The first stage of periodontal disease, gingivitis, is characterized by swollen, tender, or red gums, and your gums might bleed when you brush or floss your teeth. You can reverse gingivitis with better at-home care and more frequent cleanings with Fillmore Dental Spa. If you don’t treat it, however, it can become periodontitis.

Periodontitis is the more advanced stage of gum disease and happens when your gum tissue begins to pull away from your teeth to avoid contact with the buildup of plaque. When your gums pull away or recede, it creates pockets around your teeth. These pockets eventually fill up with more debris and plaque, which further irritates your gum tissue and causes it to degrade.

This cycle continues until the structures supporting your teeth decompose, which ultimately leads to tooth loss.

What are the symptoms of periodontal disease?

Some of the more typical warning signs of periodontal disease are:

  • Inflamed gums
  • Bleeding when you brush or floss
  • Teeth that look longer
  • An awkward feeling in how your bite fits together
  • Loose teeth

Periodontal disease is notorious for developing silently, however, meaning that many people aren’t aware that they have the disease until it’s already progressed into its more advanced stages.

The dental professionals at Fillmore Dental Spa assess the health of your gums whenever you come in for a routine cleaning and exam and can spot signs of gum disease at the earliest stages when the condition is easiest to treat. Because of this, it’s incredibly advantageous to your oral health to maintain regular cleanings and exams.

What are the treatments for gum disease?

One of the most common treatments for gum disease is a procedure called scaling and root planing. Scaling is a deep cleaning of your teeth to remove plaque and tartar buildup from both above and below your gum line.

After your dentist successfully scales your teeth, they can perform root planing, which involves sanding down the surfaces of your teeth to make it more difficult for plaque and tartar to build up.

Fillmore Dental Spa also offers a treatment called Perio Protect®, which is a custom-fitted tray that delivers medication directly to your gum pockets to fight the bacteria.
