Implant Restoration Q&A

What is an implant restoration?

An implant restoration is an artificial tooth or set of artificial teeth that your dentist attaches to a dental implant, like a crown, bridge, or implant-supported dentures.

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root made from titanium, ceramic, or another biocompatible material. Your dentist or oral surgeon inserts your dental implant into your jawbone where you’re missing a tooth, where it fuses with the bone tissue and provides a foundation for your restoration.

The combination of a dental implant and an implant restoration creates a replacement tooth that mirrors the structural design of your natural teeth.

What are the benefits of implant restorations?

Implant restorations provide all of the same benefits as traditional restorations, like:

  • Restoring your teeth
  • Improving your oral health
  • Enhancing your ability to speak and chew properly
  • Evenly distributing the force in your bite
  • Holding the rest of your teeth in alignment

Implant restorations also have several advantages over traditional restorations. Because they connect directly to your jaw through the implants, they tend to feel more secure and, therefore, are more comfortable in your mouth.

They also prevent bone loss in your jaw because the dental implants provide your jawbone with healthy stimulation, unlike non-implant restorations like traditional bridges and conventional dentures. Unlike traditional crowns and bridges, implant restorations don’t require you to remove enamel or alter your teeth to stay attached to your mouth.

Implant restorations tend to look better, too, since they mimic the structure of your natural teeth.

What is the process of getting an implant restoration?

If you already have dental implants in place, getting an implant restoration is an easy process. Your dentist takes an impression of your mouth and sends it to a special lab, where a technician uses it to create your restoration so that it fits perfectly in your mouth. When your restoration comes back from the lab, your dentist seals it to the abutment of your implant.

If you’re getting a crown, Fillmore Dental Spa can fit you with your implant restoration in a single office visit by making you a CEREC® same-day crown.

When you get a same-day crown, your dentist takes an impression of your mouth and uploads it to an in-office milling machine. The milling machine carves your crown from a small ceramic block while you wait in the chair, and your dentist seals it in place as soon as it’s ready.
