Crowns and Bridges Q&A

What are crowns and bridges?

Crowns and bridges are oral prosthetics. If you damage a tooth, lose a tooth, or develop a cavity, crowns and bridges can restore the aesthetic appearance of your smile and make daily tasks like chewing easier.

How do crowns and bridges differ?

Crowns and bridges are different in several ways:

Crowns are tooth-shaped coverings that envelope the entire portion of your tooth above the gum line. They’re usually made of porcelain or ceramic, two materials that mimic the color and light-reflecting properties of your natural tooth enamel. A crown protects your tooth from further damage and decay. It also prevents harmful bacteria from entering the center (root canal) of your tooth and allows you to smile and speak confidently.

Bridges fill a gap or space in your smile. They feature a false tooth (pontic) and two dental crowns. The false tooth fills the place where a permanent tooth used to be and your Fillmore Dental Spa provider bonds the crowns to the healthy teeth on either side of the gap. Ultimately, a bridge restores your smile to its near-original condition, while lowering your risk of gum recession and bone loss.

How do I get a crown or bridge?

Getting a crown or bridge begins with a consultation at Fillmore Dental Spa. During this appointment, your provider conducts an oral exam, reviews your oral health history, and asks you about your goals for treatment.

If you’re receiving a traditional crown, Fillmore Dental Spa takes impressions of your affected tooth and sends the impressions to a laboratory that manufactures your crown. A week or two later, you return to the office and your Fillmore Dental Spa provider bonds your crown to your damaged tooth.

If you’re on a tight schedule or don’t have time for another appointment, Fillmore Dental Spa also offers CEREC® same-day crowns. The process for receiving a CEREC crown is similar. The only difference is that your Fillmore Dental Spa provider takes digital impressions and creates your crown on the same day of your appointment, using the in-office CEREC milling machine.

Getting a traditional dental bridge requires several appointments. After conducting an oral exam, your Fillmore Dental Spa provider takes impressions of your teeth on either side of your missing tooth. They send these impressions to a laboratory that manufactures your bridge.

You return to Fillmore Dental Spa a week or two later, and your Fillmore Dental Spa provider bonds your bridge to the healthy teeth on either side of the gap.
