Periodontal Disease

Millions of Americans have periodontal disease and don't even know it. Common symptoms are:

  • Bleeding gums when brushing or flossing

  • Receding gums (teeth appear longer)

  • Obvious plaque, tartar or calculus

  • Spaces developing between your teeth

  • Swollen, red or tender gums

  • Persistent bad breath

  • Sensitive teeth

  • Teeth are loose or mobile

PERIO protect

Unfortunately biofilm, a community of bacteria in the mouth reproduce very quickly. To maintain the health of periodontal pockets between cleaning visits, our office recommends Perio Protect, a custom fitted tray that delivers medication directly into the pockets of the gums that will then deliver and maintain medications that can kill the bacteria causing gum disease.

More about Periodontal Disease...

The periodontal disease process is one that affects many people around the world; it can cause recession of gum tissue which may lead up towards exposing bone near an already-exposed root. Roots susceptible due to periodontal diseases become more vulnerable to acid build-up on enamel fascial layers making them porous enough for potentially harmful bacteria colonies under optimal conditions. Plaque that collects in these pockets can be difficult to remove during regular brushing and interdental cleaning. All the byproducts of plaque collected here will continue damaging your gums, periodontal ligament, or bone until it's too late! Some cases are worse than others; if you have lost some teeth already then an extraction may become necessary.

How can I prevent periodontal diseases?

Daily good oral hygiene can help reduce your risk of developing periodontal diseases. Brush your teeth twice a day to remove plaque from all surfaces, including the inner and outer fronts as well as chewing areas between each tooth! You should also use fluoride containing toothpaste every time you go for regular checkups so that cavities don't get worse or start up again after treatment with an antibiotic like penicillin which kills off healthy bacteria along side bad ones causing gum disease symptoms such as redness/swelling around the area where there used to be no discomfort at all before starting antibiotics

In advanced periodontitis, the teeth lose more support as this disease continues to destroy what remains of their ligaments and bone. Unless treated, those affected often become loose or require removal by a dentist due to loss of dental Implants in such cases where they have fallen out completely.
